A note from Governor Ted Strickland.Women comprise more than half of our world’s population, lead businesses, organize communities, hold together families and serve as role models in all walks of life. Governmental policies affect women as much as any Ohioans, but despite their overall numbers, women comprise only about one-third of applicants and appointments to Ohio’s boards and commissions. As Governor, I want that to change during my administration. By serving on boards or commissions, Ohio women have the opportunity to fulfill a wide variety of interests, ranging anywhere from the State Board of Pharmacy to the Ohio Arts Council. For information on current opportunities and how to apply, visit www.governor.ohio.gov/women and click on “Opportunities”. A recent report released by SUNY Albany shows that barriers to women’s rise to leadership in state governments persists throughout the United States; the number of women in leadership positions is substantially lower than that of men. In Ohio’s private sector, women hold just 36 percent of what would generally be considered managerial positions, although women comprise nearly half the work force. Nationally, women have made gains since 1998, increasing from 28 percent to 35 percent of public sector executive leadership positions (i.e. state agency directors). In Ohio, the number of women serving as state agency department heads doubled during that time. Even with these gains, we know there is more to be done to increase the numbers of women in these and other key leadership roles. We hope women in Ohio will seek to take action in public service and lead by example for the private sector. Diversity in leadership roles more closely reflecting our population is essential for our state’s future, so please consider applying for a position on one of Ohio’s many boards and commissions. |
